Relationship Coaching?
In college I (Todd) played on a flag football team with a bunch of guys from my dorm. I was the RA for a floor of 36 honor students in a dorm that housed 216 guys. To be honest, our team wasn’t very good. Our inability to score may have been partly due to the fact that our team was made up of nerds (I mean honor students) and not jocks (better known as student athletes). The other reason for our poor performance was directly related to the fact that we did not have a coach. From time to time one of the guys would come up with an idea – a play– they thought might help us move the ball down the field. We tried a lot of things. Some of the ideas worked well, others resulted in interceptions and fumbles. At times even luck was on our side, but for the most part, we were just playing the game without a plan. We suffered through the season together but I am confident that a with just a little coaching we could have greatly improved our game and experienced a lot more wins than losses.
We learn to play sports best through coaching. The reality is, we learn (and eventually master) most things through coaching and dedicated practice. Of course, we don’t always call it coaching. We have other word for it like: Teacher, Mentor, Instructor, Leader, Dojo and even Pastor. These people come into our lives for a season to help us get better at whatever it is we are seeking to learn and eventually master.
With a little coaching you can become…
- A pro parent
- Have an amazing marriage
- Become a great sibling
- Build deep and lasting friendships
and more!
Needing a coach isn’t a bad thing… it’s a good thing! Inviting someone into your life as a coach just shows that you want to grow, achieve goals, discover strengths, improve skills, accomplish more and enjoy life.
